![]() When she does not work as diligently, as he expected, he comments on her performance, even though she recently lost the best friend. ![]() Like Peach introduced Beck to a literary agent, he offers Beck a job at the store. Despite friendly appearance, in his mind, he despises Ethan and his cheerful temper. He has a bookstore to manage, he lives alone, he has a car and money to spend on romantic dates. However, whenever given the opportunity, he also becomes condescending. Joe even mocks Peach's taste in furniture and Blythe's cheap soda before committing his crimes. I think it is not a coincidence that both Peach and Blythe had their own businesses. He killed them, because they were richer than him, even though they did not read as many books as Joe (aka, were more stupid and superficial in his eyes). Regarding Joe, as Peach said, he did not kill Peach and Blythe for her. But Beck wanted someone to appear there and save her from a day with father's new family – so she ignored the signal. When Joe appears on a Dickens festival, another woman would notice a red flag of him finding her location by using only one Instagram post. ![]() What could drive an independent grown-up person to become dependent on a stranger? Probably, the fact that she is a writer and also grew-up reading different books, including romance, which made her insensitive to too-good-to-be-true stories. The lack of guidance in her life led to the reliance on Joe's advice. Maybe, the belief that she is not worthy of redemption was inflicted by her father, who left Beck and her mom in order to start a happy, sober life with another woman. Thus, she starts cheating on Joe with a therapist. Even after achieving the staples of an ideal version of herself – a rising writing career, stable relationships, stable job (aside from grieving the loss of her loved ones), she does not feel that she deserves to be the best version of herself. Also, Beck is rarely writing – which is only a reason for Joe to interfere and help her become an idealized version of herself. She chooses people that trap her in circumstances she is unable to get out from – Peach (her now-dead best friend) is controlling and condescending, Blythe (her now-dead boyfriend) is uncommitting and is addicted to drugs. Then we learn that she uses self-sabotage to avoid failure – in writing and in relationships with partners and friends. In the beginning, Beck is an idealized version of a dreamy love interest, wishing to become a writer and looking for a good man. I really loved how we got to know Beck, the future victim of Joe, through contrasting characteristics that made her feel real. It is funny, revealing, clever, entertaining, and sometimes scary. As everything loved by girls, the series is good. Adding the fact that the main character, Joe – a serial killer – made many girls fall in love with him also added to the appearance of a superficial media, covering topics it could not handle well. The «You» series became popular, which is why I thought that I would not like it.
